Growing Independence in Preschoolers: Helping Kids Take the Lead

November 7, 2025

Independence is more than just doing tasks on your own—it’s about giving children the confidence to explore, make choices, and feel capable. At Empowered Early Learning Academy, we encourage children to take the lead in their learning and daily routines, both in the classroom and at home.

Here are some practical ways families can support independence:

1. Let Them Help
Invite children to participate in household chores, like setting the table, sorting laundry, or watering plants. Helping with real responsibilities teaches responsibility and pride in their accomplishments.

2. Encourage Decision-Making
Offer choices throughout the day, even simple ones like, “Would you like to read this book or that one?” Making decisions helps children feel empowered and builds critical thinking skills.

3. Support Problem-Solving
When a child faces a challenge—like building a block tower or putting on a coat—resist the urge to jump in immediately. Ask questions like, “What could you try next?” to guide them toward solutions independently.

4. Teach Self-Advocacy
Help children express their needs, preferences, and feelings. Simple phrases like, “I need help,” or “I’d like to try this myself,” give children the words to advocate for themselves confidently.

5. Celebrate Small Wins
Recognize and praise efforts, not just successes. Every time a child tries something on their own, they’re building confidence and learning that mistakes are part of growth.

At EELA, fostering independence is a key part of our curriculum. By giving children opportunities to try, choose, and solve problems, we help them grow into confident, capable learners—ready for preschool challenges and life beyond.
