Tips to Prepare Your New Preschooler for Their First Day

Starting preschool is such an exciting milestone — for both your child and your family! At Empowered Early Learning Academy, we know that the transition to preschool can bring big feelings: curiosity, excitement, and sometimes a little nervousness. The good news is there are lots of simple, loving ways you can help your new preschooler feel ready and confident for their first big day.
1. Talk About Preschool Early and Often
Start chatting about preschool in a positive and upbeat way. Describe it as a fun place where your child will make friends, play, learn new things, and be cared for by kind teachers. Let them ask questions, and share stories about your own first school experiences (keep it light and happy!).
2. Read Preschool-Themed Books Together
Storytime is a comforting way to help your child understand what to expect. Books like "The Kissing Hand" by Audrey Penn or "Llama Llama Misses Mama" by Anna Dewdney can spark great conversations about feelings and first days.
3. Practice Daily Routines
Help your child get used to preschool rhythms by practicing simple routines like waking up, getting dressed, eating breakfast, and saying goodbye. Consistent routines help children feel safe and prepared.
4. Build Independence with Small Tasks
Support your child in practicing self-care skills like washing hands, putting on shoes, and cleaning up toys. Feeling capable with these little tasks can make a big difference in building preschool confidence.
5. Visit the Classroom or Meet the Teacher
If your preschool offers an open house, meet-the-teacher day, or playground visit — take advantage! Familiar faces and spaces help reduce first-day nerves.
6. Offer Lots of Encouragement and Reassurance
It’s completely normal for your child to feel unsure at first. Offer extra hugs, words of encouragement, and gentle reminders that you’ll be back to pick them up soon. Your calm, confident attitude helps your child feel safe.
7. Start with Short Goodbyes
On the first few days, keep your goodbye sweet, confident, and quick. Lingering too long can make it harder for both you and your child. Trust the teachers — they’re ready to help!
At Empowered Early Learning Academy, we’re here to make this transition smooth, joyful, and full of support. We can’t wait to welcome your little one into our EELA family and begin this exciting learning journey together!
